Bare branches, first drawn in ink and then let go of on the press.
The series begins with three drawn studies: winter trunks in graphite and ink against a flat ochre ground, every branch described.
The monoprints that follow take the same subject and hand it to the process. Ink is worked on the plate and pulled once, so the branch is only ever suggested — a smear, a broken line, a spray of black where the pressure caught — and no two pulls repeat.
